Retractable shade sails: why they last longer

Fabric ages due to three things: UV radiation, moisture, and mechanical stress. A sail that remains tensioned at all times is constantly exposed to all three.

What rolling up changes

Bahama sails retract. They are only exposed to the weather when they are actually needed. The rest of the time, the fabric is protected, the seams are not under tension, and UV radiation cannot reach it. This is the main reason why these sails achieve many times the service life of a permanently tensioned canopy.

When you should retract

When wind picks up, during persistent rain, and throughout the winter. Short showers are not critical as long as the sail is able to dry out afterward.

Rolling up while wet is the mistake

As with awning fabric, the rule is: never leave it rolled up while wet. Otherwise, mildew stains—that is, mold in the fabric—will develop, and they cannot be removed. So, after the rain, extend it once more and let it dry, even if the sun has already gone down.

Cleaning

Sweep away leaves and dust with a soft broom. For stains, use lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner or harsh agents—both destroy the impregnation, and that is exactly what keeps water and dirt out.

Check the technology once a year

For retractable sails, the drive, ropes, and attachment points should be inspected once a year. This takes half an hour and prevents the damage that would otherwise occur in a storm.
