Hang up a large mirror – or stand it up?
A mirror two meters high is a piece of furniture, not a picture. It must be fastened accordingly – or not at all.
The floor mirror
Freestanding mirrors lean against the wall or stand on their own frame. They do not require drilling, can be moved at any time, and are therefore suitable for rental apartments and rooms where the furniture layout is still subject to change. The standing angle is important: too steep, and it will tip over; too shallow, and you will see the ceiling.
The hanging mirror
It saves floor space and has a more tranquil effect. For this, the wall must be load-bearing. This is unproblematic with concrete and solid brick. For drywall, you need toggle bolts or—better yet—fastening into the sub-structure. For old walls with soft plaster, a test drill should be performed beforehand.
At what height
For a full-length mirror, the following applies: the bottom edge is ideally five to ten centimeters above the floor; that way, you can see your entire self, including your shoes. For a mirror in the hallway, the eye level of the people who primarily use it is the deciding factor.
Where it faces
The view in the mirror should show something beautiful: the window, a plant, a bright wall. Opposite a room door, a large mirror often feels restless because every movement is doubled in the room.
