ExtremeLine HeatTower Heizstrahler auf der Terrasse im Herbst

Infrared or gas: what really provides warmth on the patio

Every autumn, the same question arises: how can you keep sitting outside in the evening without freezing? The two answers available on the market work in completely different ways.

Gas patio heaters warm the air

A patio heater burns gas, thereby warming the air around it. This works as long as the air is still. As soon as there is a breeze, the warm air blows away, and you are left sitting in the cold again. On top of that, there is the gas cylinder, changing, storage, and an open flame on the terrace.

Infrared heaters warm people and surfaces

An infrared heater does not heat the air; instead, it heats whatever it shines on – skin, clothing, tabletops, the floor. This is the same principle as the sun in winter: the air is cold, but it is still warm in the sun. This is why infrared still works even when it is drafty.

ExtremeLine models

We carry the heaters from ExtremeLine, the heating and lighting brand of S.E. System Electronic GmbH from Halfing – just under half an hour away from Wasserburg. The HeatFlare is the designer heater for terraces and conservatories. The HeatTube is the slim tube for walls and ceilings where space is limited. The HeatShine is a carbon heater with particularly soft light. The HeatTower is free-standing and can be moved to wherever you happen to be sitting.

Three questions, then you have your model

How high is the heater mounted? The higher it is, the more power is required. How exposed is the space? The windier it is, the more power you need. And how are you sitting – at a dining table or in a lounge area? One heater is often sufficient over a table, but over a lounge, people are spread further apart and seated lower.

What an evening costs

At 30 cents per kilowatt-hour, a 2-kilowatt unit costs around 60 cents per hour. An evening for two with a heater therefore costs just under two euros – significantly less than most people assume.

One transmitter for everything

The receiver technology is inside the unit, but the transmitter is not. Handheld and wall transmitters are available for ExRemote 2.0, Bluetooth, Somfy io, and Warema WMS. If you already operate your awning with Somfy or Warema, you can control the heaters with the same remote. And one transmitter controls multiple units, even if you buy three heaters.
