Leiner Markise FINO über der Terrasse mit Sonnenliegen

Awning or louvered roof – which one suits your garden?

Anyone looking to shade their terrace will sooner or later arrive at this question: awning or louvered roof. Both provide protection from the sun, both look good, and yet they are two very different solutions. We have been installing sun protection around Wasserburg am Inn for over 60 years and will explain what matters when making your decision.

The awning: lightweight, flexible, unobtrusive

A folding-arm awning is attached to the house wall and extends when needed. Once retracted, it disappears into its cassette, leaving the facade clear. This is the great advantage: it does not alter the house, requires no posts, and is installed in just a few hours.

The awning is the right choice if you primarily want shade on sunny days and do not use the terrace when it rains anyway. In strong winds, it must be retracted; a wind sensor handles this automatically. Our models FINO awning and CENTO awning from Leiner are available in widths from 200 to over 400 centimeters with projections up to 300 centimeters. You can find all sizes and fabric colors in our Awnings collection.

The louvered roof: an outdoor room

A louvered roof is a permanent aluminum construction with adjustable louvers. When closed, it is rainproof; when opened, it lets sun and air through; in the intermediate position, it provides shade and dissipates heat upward. This allows you to use your terrace from spring to autumn, even during a summer thunderstorm or when it gets cool in the evening.

Renson louvered roofs can be expanded step by step: with side screens against wind and low-lying sun, with glass sliding walls, with LED lighting, and with heaters. The Algarve and the Camargue are available in sizes from 3 by 3 to 7 by 4 meters, with one to four posts, either free-standing in the garden or attached to the house wall. We will discuss which model fits your house together. Those who prefer a permanent roof without movable louvers will find a slim alternative in the Lapure. You can find an overview in the Louvered Roofs collection.

How to base your decision

  • Usage: Only sun protection on nice days, then an awning. A terrace as a second living room in all weather, then a louvered roof.
  • Space: An awning only needs the wall. A louvered roof requires posts and a foundation, but it can stand without a house wall.
  • Wind: The awning retracts starting at a certain wind speed. The louvered roof remains standing and can withstand much more.
  • Budget: An awning is the more affordable purchase. A louvered roof costs more but permanently increases the value of your house and can be expanded later.
  • Appearance: When retracted, the awning is barely noticeable. The louvered roof is a design element that should match the house, which is why the Renson models are available in anthracite, black, white, and other colors.

Permits and installation

An awning is generally permit-free. With a louvered roof, it depends on the size, distance to the property line, and local regulations; we will clarify this with you in advance. We install both solutions ourselves: we measure on-site, check the wall or surface, and coordinate the control system with existing roller shutters or external venetian blinds so that everything eventually runs via a handheld transmitter or smartphone. We also carry matching handheld transmitters and control systems.

Our advice

Take an honest look at how you have used your terrace over the last two summers. If you go inside at the first sign of rain anyway, a good awning will serve you perfectly. If you want to enjoy the evening outside even in changeable weather, you will be very happy with a louvered roof. If you are unsure, come visit our showroom in Wasserburg or send us a photo of your terrace to info@huber-lebensgefuehl.de. We will advise you, plan the appropriate size with you, and deliver and install throughout the entire region.
