Outdoor mirrors in the garden: where they work best and what you should look out for
A mirror in the garden is one of the simplest tricks to make an outdoor area appear larger. It brings greenery and light into corners that would otherwise lie in the shade, and turns a narrow terrace or courtyard into a space with depth. To ensure it retains this effect even after several winters, choosing the right model and the right location is essential.
Only outdoor mirrors belong outside
A standard indoor mirror cannot withstand rain and frost in the long term. For this reason, there are special models for outdoors, where the mirror surface is treated for exterior use and is securely protected within the frame. In our shop, these include the models from the outdoor series by Deknudt, such as the Lucka XXL, the round Hoop, or the Oculus. The manufacturer provides a two-year warranty on these outdoor models.
Where a garden mirror is most effective
- On a wall or house exterior at the end of a narrow garden: The view no longer ends at the wall, but appears to continue.
- Opposite plants or a flower bed: The mirror doubles the greenery instead of displaying an empty area.
- In a courtyard or on a terrace with little light: The mirror surface reflects daylight back into the space.
- As a focal point in a seating area: A large, simple frame looks more balanced than several small mirrors.
Consider the sun, neighbors, and birds
Stand in your chosen spot before hanging the mirror and see what it will reflect. It should not look into a neighbor's window, and it should not reflect midday sun directly onto windows, seating areas, or sensitive plants. Large mirror surfaces can also confuse birds. Therefore, a position in front of a hedge, a wall, or under a roof overhang is usually better than an open area that reflects the open sky.
The wall must support the weight
Hanging hardware is included. The mounting surface is the deciding factor: Large models weigh between 20 and 53 kilograms and must be mounted on a load-bearing wall by two people. A wooden fence or thin cladding is not sufficient for this. The Oculus requires no wall at all, as it stands freely on the ground.
