Outdoor rugs: what they really have to withstand
A furnished terrace is not yet a room. A rug turns a surface of concrete slabs into an area with a beginning and an end—the same principle as in the living room.
What an outdoor rug must be able to do
It gets wet, it lies in the sun, and sand gets tracked across it. An indoor rug would grow mold under these conditions and fade unevenly. The outdoor rugs from Weishäupl are made from fabrics that shed water and are UV-resistant.
Size
The most common mistake is a rug that is too small. It should be large enough that at least the front legs of all seating furniture are placed on it. Otherwise, it looks like a doormat in the middle of the room.
Where it belongs
Under the lounge area, not under the dining table—that is where everything that falls ends up. On wooden decking, it should be lifted regularly so that the boards underneath can dry out.
Care
Shake out, sweep off, and brush down with water and mild soap if necessary. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner. Over the winter, roll it up dry and store it indoors—not because it cannot withstand the frost, but because months of moisture take a toll on any fabric.
What goes well with it
A pouf as a footrest and additional seating, a basket for cushions and blankets, and lighting. These are the pieces that decide whether someone will still be sitting outside in the evening.
