Heizstrahler auf einer Terrasse an einem Herbstabend

Which patio heater is suitable for my terrace?

From the middle of August, the same thing happens every year. It’s warm during the day, and at 9:30 p.m., the first person grabs a blanket. That is exactly when the evening on the terrace ends, even though the best evenings are yet to come.

Why infrared instead of a patio heater

A classic gas patio heater warms the air. This only works to a limited extent outdoors, because warm air rises and the first gust of wind carries it away.

Infrared heaters do the opposite: they heat the surfaces and the people sitting in front of them, just like the sun does. That is why they still work even when there is a breeze. And they are ready instantly – no preheating, no changing gas cylinders.

What to choose by

The mounting height is the most important factor. The higher the heater is hung, the larger the area it reaches, and the less heat arrives at the bottom. Under a louvered roof at a height of three meters, you need more power than under an awning at two and a half.

Then the seating arrangement. A long dining table wants a long, narrow heater spanning its entire length. A lounge area where you sit low needs heat from the side or from an angle above.

And finally, the aesthetics. Some devices are meant to disappear, while others are allowed to be seen. Both are possible.

Red light or not

Carbon heaters get warm in a few seconds and emit a visible glow while doing so. Some people like this because it looks cozy. If you don't want red light on the terrace in the evening, choose a heater with a lower filament temperature, which emits practically no red light.

The point that almost everyone overlooks

In radio-controlled devices, the receiver technology is built in, but the transmitter is not. If you want to operate the heater with your existing Somfy or Warema awning control system, the compatible version must be ordered – it cannot be retrofitted.

A single transmitter can control multiple devices. With two or three heaters, you still only need it once.
