Jumbrella XL parasol

At Bahama, XL stands for extra large. The Jumbrella XL spans 25 to 49 square meters from a single mast and is intended for areas where three or four smaller umbrellas would otherwise be needed: beer gardens, hotel terraces, public squares, or spacious private terraces. There is a choice of seven square and rectangular dimensions with side lengths of up to 7 meters. The 7 x 5 meter version received the iF Design Award in 2020.

Opening is achieved via a maintenance-free servo mechanism in four stages, without a crank and without loose ropes or plugs. Two tensioning levers with spring clips bring the membrane into tension, and cylinder locks in the levers secure it against unauthorized operation. Even at this size, the step-by-step opening can be managed by one person.

The support column combines an inner and outer column into one profile: a diameter of around 95 millimeters, a wall thickness of about 3.7 millimeters, extruded, internally reinforced, and PES powder-coated. Twelve spokes made of aluminum rectangular hollow profiles of the special AlF30/32 alloy are held by additional support struts and fastened with stainless steel axle bolts and spring cotters. No plastic parts are used in the load-bearing structure, and spokes and supports can be replaced individually.

Depending on the model, the clearance height is between 235 and 250 centimeters, the height when open is between 354 and 395 centimeters, and the umbrella weight is between 159 and 200 kilograms. Note the ground clearance at the corner: it ranges from 98 centimeters for the 600 x 514 cm model and 83 centimeters for the 500 x 500 cm model, down to 13 centimeters for the 700 x 700 cm model. This means the largest model hangs almost to the ground at the corners – nice for shade, but inconvenient if a path runs there.

Available sizes are 500 x 500, 550 x 550, 600 x 600, 600 x 514, 700 x 500, 700 x 600, and 700 x 700 centimeters. The standard material is betex®05: 100 percent polyester with a transparent coating on the top side, around 200 grams per square meter, UPF 50+ (with the exception of the color Snow 9577), a water column of at least 1,000 millimeters, OEKO-TEX 100 Class 1, washable, and replaceable as a single piece. There are 28 colors to choose from in the shop. The frame is available in Traffic White RAL 9016 or Anthracite Grey RAL 7016, both with a fine structure finish; special colors and finishes such as Golden Oak, concrete, or Corten steel are available on request.

On request, the umbrella can be fitted with a valance, the fabric strip running around the edge of the canopy, which is around 30 centimeters high here. It shields better against low-hanging sun, creates a softer visual appearance, and can be printed as an advertising space. The honest disadvantage: it lowers the clearance height at the edge by precisely those 30 centimeters, and all dimensions in the catalog refer to the version without a valance. It is supplied without one as standard, but we can add it for an extra charge. In addition to betex®05, spin-dyed branded acrylic fabric (around 300 g/m², five-year guarantee on color fastness) and Precontraint 302 (around 480 g/m², welded segments, flame-retardant according to DIN 4102-B1) are also available on request.

The permissible wind load decreases with size, and this is the most important figure of all for this model. When stationary anchored, it is 110 km/h for the 500 x 500 cm, 100 for the 550 x 550 cm, 90 for the 600 x 600 cm and 600 x 514 cm, 70 for models with a 7-meter edge length, and 60 for the 700 x 700 cm. With mobile fastening, the values are significantly lower, approximately 72 instead of 110 km/h for the 500 x 500 cm; for umbrellas with a side length of 7 meters, Bahama recommends stationary anchoring only. For mobile mounting, there is a choice of a steel cassette frame 1200 x 1200 millimeters for 16 paving slabs (approx. 520 kilograms filled), a steel plate stand with eight plates of 65.2 kilograms each (approx. 540 kilograms), and an exposed concrete stand weighing around 2,500 kilograms; for stationary mounting, there is the tiltable base for embedding in concrete, the mounting base plate 610 x 610 x 20 millimeters, and the combination mount with winter cover.

Bahama grants a 37-month wind guarantee on the open umbrella, which can be extended twice for a total of 111 months. Replacement membranes are available in all three fabrics and optionally with or without a valance; spokes and supports are available individually. Bahama Service handles cleaning, repairs, winter storage, and the fitting of new membranes.

Production takes place in Reichshof in the Oberbergisches Land region, entirely in-house and only after your order is placed. Please get in touch via the contact form before ordering – especially at this scale, a lot depends on the location and the ground. If two smaller umbrellas make more sense and are more wind-stable for your area, we will tell you so.

For me, the Jumbrella XL was the answer to a question I am asked time and again: one umbrella instead of four. Up to 49 square meters from a single mast, plus the rectangular dimensions, which work much better for long rows of tables than a square.

What I will say openly: the wind ratings decrease with size. When anchored stationarily, the 5 × 5 m version can remain open up to 110 km/h, while the 7 × 7 m version only up to 60 km/h. Anyone with a windy location is better off with two smaller umbrellas.

The membrane is made of betex®05, a coated polyester fabric – not acrylic. Dry brushing is usually sufficient. For heavier soiling, clean the fabric with lukewarm water and mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow the umbrella to dry while fully open. The one-piece membrane is removable and washable; for this size, the Bahama service can take care of this upon request. In the event of persistent rain, it is better to close the umbrella and subsequently dry a soaked fabric while open.

Wipe the central mast, spokes, and support struts with clear water and a soft cloth. The PES powder coating is resistant to impact and scratches and requires no care products. Please do not use high-pressure cleaners, abrasive agents, solvents, or chlorine. When closing, do not trap the fabric between the spokes and struts; fold it overlapping, secure it with the strap, and re-tighten the strap once if kept closed for longer periods.

During the winter, the umbrella should remain closed, strapped, and dry. The comfort protective cover made of betex®05 is optionally available, optionally with a telescopic pole that significantly facilitates covering at this height. If the umbrella needs to be completely removed from the weather, Bahama will collect, wash, repair, and store it; the combination base features a winter cover lid for the then-open ground sleeve.

Creases and fold lines in the fabric are unavoidable with every custom-made umbrella and do not constitute a defect. The same applies to whitening at highly tensioned creases and to localized friction marks caused by movement in the wind. These phenomena affect the appearance, not the function.

Every Jumbrella XL is a custom-made product and is built in Reichshof after your order is placed – in your specified size, fabric, cover and frame color, and with or without a valance. Bahama states a production time of approximately five to six weeks for this series, or seven to nine weeks for special paint finishes or column extensions. In addition, there is the shipping time, which has a minimum lead time of around two weeks.

We will provide you with a binding date in the order confirmation once production has been scheduled. During the peak season from April to July, production is at high capacity, which may result in longer lead times. Please let us know your preferred delivery dates before placing your order; scheduled deliveries are available for an additional charge.

Ground anchoring is not included in the price of the parasol and should be decided early on. Stationary solutions require structural work that should be addressed during the planning phase; mobile solutions require space and weight—around 2,500 kilograms for a concrete base. Equally important: electrical equipment such as LEDs, radiant heaters, or Wi-Fi runs via cables in the frame and requires appropriately prepared ground anchoring. Changing this later can only be done with significant effort.

Delivery is carried out by a freight forwarder to the curb. The parasol travels in a rigid cardboard cylinder approximately 5,400 millimeters in length and 550 millimeters in outer diameter; the transport weight is between 216 and 265 kilograms, depending on the model. Upon request, Bahama can provide forklift-compatible delivery on three wooden pallets, including tension belts. Please arrange for helpers or equipment for unloading—the freight forwarder will unload at the curb.

Because every parasol is manufactured according to your specifications, the right of withdrawal is excluded for this custom-made product.
